The Continental-Scale Soil-Moisture Precipitation Feedback in Europe with Parameterized and Explicit Convection

چکیده
Abstract Soil moisture atmosphere interactions are key elements of the regional climate system. There is a well-founded hope that more accurate representation soil moisture-precipitation feedback would improve simulation summer precipitation on daily to seasonal, time scales. However, uncertainties have persistently remained as simulated strongly sensitive model deep convection. Here we assess using GPU-accelerated version COSMO. We simulate and compare impact continental-scale springtime soil-moisture anomalies at convection-resolving (2.2 km) convection-parameterizing resolution (12 km). conduct re-analysis-driven simulations 10 seasons (1999-2008) in continental Europe. While both qualitatively agree positive sign moisture-induced precipitation, they differ frequency: When convection parameterized, wetter predominantly leads frequent events, when treated explicitly, primarily become intense. The results indicate sensitivity stronger with parameterized convection, suggesting land surface-atmosphere coupling may be overestimated. In addition, feedback’s complex terrain assessed for perturbations different horizontal confirm negative sub-continental anomalies, which manifests itself local decrease wet-hour frequency. intensity reinforces events same (positive feedback). two processes represented differently explicit explaining much difference between simulations.

[1] We perform two 23 year simulations using a regional climate model coupled with the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Land Model version 3.5 (RegCM‐CLM) to investigate land‐atmosphere coupling in the continental United States during the cold season (October–April) and the role of soil water phase. One simulation allows the land surface to interact freely (RunI) while the oth...

Regions of strong coupling between soil moisture and precipitation.
Previous estimates of land-atmosphere interaction (the impact of soil moisture on precipitation) have been limited by a lack of observational data and by the model dependence of computational estimates. To counter the second limitation, a dozen climate-modeling groups have recently performed the same highly controlled numerical experiment as part of a coordinated comparison project. This allows...
متن کاملSummer soil moisture regulated by precipitation frequency in China
Drought is one of the most important but least understood issues in global environmental changes. Decrease in soil moisture is an indicator of drought. Here, we analyze summer (June–August) soil moisture measurement data across 50 sites in China in order to investigate the linkage between climate change and drought. At the country scale, a significant decrease in summer soil moisture in the top...
